Many people have laid claim to this unique part of Africa and wars have been waged on its soil. Today, the Magaliesberg region is recognised as the birthplace of mankind and visitors are welcomed here from all over the world. It was proclaimed a World Heritage Site in 1999. Maropeng (which is a Setswane word meaning “the place where we once lived”) at The Cradle of Humankind Visitors Centre, has been awarded the Best New Tourism Project by the British Guild of Travel Writers.
